Kosov@: Carnival in the Eye of the Storm

Kosov-01.jpgIn April 2000 Scholz curated a major international program Kosov@: Carnival in the Eye of the Storm at Pacific NW College of Art in Portland, Oregon. It was a reaction to the seemingly non-existent artistic responses to this conflict in Europe and the United States due to a widespread political confusion that effected all camps. Carnival in the Eye of the Storm: Kosov@ consisted of an exhibition with thirty artists, an international conference and a film series about the Kosov@ conflict. Artists, scholars, journalists and students from Kosovo/a, Serbia (proper), UK, France, Germany, Croatia and Montenegro traveled to Portland for this exhibition and conference to discuss questions of war, art and politics.

As part of the exhibition, which included artwork by students and well-known artists alike, several web-based artworks were projected. The conference was prepared through a ten-day discussion on an online message board. Daily film screenings at the Portland Film Center alternated with conference discussions and tours through the exhibition. The human rights organization Mercy Corps International supported the project and presented their activities in Kosovo/a alongside the exhibition.
